Thailand is officially endorsing LGBT tourism for the first time by being “Presenting Partner of ITB Berlin 2018 LGBT Travel”. This is a milestone for the Tourism Authority of Thailand in its marketing efforts.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s new marketing campaign “Open to the New Shades” is also taken as an opportunity to finally target the LGBT travel community. Thailand has been known for a long time as a LGBT-friendly destination, due to a deeprooted culture of tolerance in the population. However, until recently it was still not perceived by authorities as a proper tourism market to be capitalised on.
Times are changing and TAT is now ready to also highlight Thailand to the LGBT community. TAT is going gradually into that market, all in subtle nuances. For example, its recent advertising campaign around the “Open to the New Shades” – which invites travellers to discover their own Thailand – showed a male couple going clubbing and watching a sunrise over a Northern Thailand mountain.
“TAT is actually honoured to be part of the LGBT Travel at ITB Berlin 2018 and to have been named ‘ITB Berlin LGBT Presenting Partner’. Without a doubt the LGBT market has always been an important travel segment for Thailand and we will continue our efforts to position Thailand as a leading destination to the LGBT community in Southeast Asia”, said TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn. “Our Kingdom is open to every possible shade under the rainbow. Moreover, equality is the cornerstone of Thainess”, he added.
