Oman government finally confirmed the opening of the new terminal of Muscat International Airport, a major step to position the Sultanate as an alternative global hub between Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The new facility will accommodate 12 million passengers a year in Phase 1 and 48 million in its ultimate development phase. The first stage covers 580,000 m2 and features 86 check-in counters, 10 baggage claim belts, 40 gates, 29 lounges, 29 aircraft stands with jet-bridges as well as expanded retail and food areas. The airport is the main base for national carrier Oman Air which serves 48 destinations with its fleet of 47 aircraft.
