Promoting Equality across the Industry

Travel is much more than just transporting, accommodating and entertaining customers. The mission of travel companies, said must be to make travelling easier and worry-free and to help each traveller become an ambassador of their own cultural identity. We started by asking Jane Jie Sun, CEO of Ctrip, Asia’s largest online travel agency, a little about the business.

Ctrip was founded in 1999 and has been listed on NASDAQ since 2003, we are the largest online travel agency in China and in Asia, while also the second largest online travel agency in the world with a market capitalisation of around US$25 billion.

We are focused on enhancing services through innovation and technology. Ctrip’s emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Cloud Computing offers an in-depth insight into the everevolving trends and behaviour of Chinese travellers.
Launched in 2017, Ctrip’s Global SOS service enables Ctrip to help customers in emergency situations such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Ctrip also operates 24/7 call centres, providing professional consultation around the clock. Ctrip’s data centres support accurate forecasting and data processing to provide services meeting the needs of all our customers.

How important is gender equality in the travel and tourism industry? How do you achieve gender equality in your business?

Gender equality is vital for any industry. Every day we are witnesses to the innovation that diversity in the workforce can bring. By ensuring gender equality, we are making advancements which lead to full utilisation of precious resources. As the female CEO of a major Chinese tech company, I highly value female presence and strive to provide a supportive environment.

I value flexible policies and a positive mindset to ensure that from recruitment to retention to remuneration, our female employees are supported. Ctrip currently has several practices already in place such as maternity leave, paid leave, baby bonuses, free taxi rides during one’s pregnancy, workfrom-home options and more.
At Ctrip more than 50% of our entire employees are female, including in seven high management positions. Ctrip will continue to pursue gender equality as a core value and ensure that all employees are evaluated based on merits.

What more could businesses do to achieve equality?

I find being attentive, listening to employees of all levels and making changes result in an inclusive and supportive environment that gives way to balance and equality. We must support everyone in our workplace and embrace not only diversity but any challenges that stand in the way to the path of equality.
