Southwestern Germany celebrates the bicentennial of the bicycle!
Baden-Württemberg, or Southwest Germany to make it easier, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Germany. With more than 52 million overnight stays in 2016, tourism is a very important sector in the local economy, and it’s getting more and more international – as almost every fourth guest comes from abroad.
Andreas Braun, Managing Director, State Tourist Board Baden-Württemberg, says the region has some very convincing attractions… “First off, there are world famous landscapes – just think about Black Forest – Southwest Germany is a real draw for every nature lover. Vibrant historic towns are also perfect spots for a city break as they offer unique charm and local buzz. And you should try our exquisite cuisine: no other German region has more Michelin-starred restaurants and the food is delicious at every budget level.”
Southwest Germany is famous for its creative entrepreneurs. This year the region celebrates the 200th anniversary of the bicycle, invented in Mannheim in 1817 by Karl Drais. Today, Baden- Württemberg is a bicycle rider’s paradise, with hundreds of bike routes that pass through beautiful landscapes. ITB Berlin is at the heart of Baden- Württemberg’s promotional offering. “We’ve been an exhibitor at ITB for decades,” says Braun. “It has grown to be the most important international platform in the industry. Nowhere else we can meet agents or journalists from all over the world in such a concentrated way.”
