Munich Airport will celebrate its 25th anniversary at a new site on May 17, yet another milestone for a transport hub that has grown rapidly to become one of Europe’s leading airports. With volume in the first 25 years growing from 12 to over 42 million annual passengers, the Bavarian hub has earned the title of Europe’s Best Airport nine times in the World Airport Awards conducted by London-based aviation consultancy, Skytrax — and that in the last 12 years. Meanwhile, in March 2015 Munich became the first European airport to earn five star status.
The coveted five star honor is awarded to airports that offer an outstanding passenger experience and premium service. “We are very proud of the many honors and awards we have received over the years,” said Dr. Michael Kerkloh, CEO and President, Munich Airport. “But being awarded Europe’s first and only Five Star Airport by Skytrax is an extraordinary accolade which challenges us every day anew.” One of the key driving factors behind the unrivalled success of Munich Airport is its development into one of Europe’s leading hubs. The percentage of passengers changing planes in Munich has tripled from 12 to 36% in the last 25 years. The thriving hub traffic at Munich Airport now provides fast and direct access to around 250 destinations in over 70 countries around the world
