Ten years ago in 2007, the vast Goldsteig hiking trail named was declared open, allowing visitors to traverse 660 kilometers of trails that lead through the Upper-Palatinate and the Bavarian forests — from Marktredwitz to Passau. Goldsteig follows a number of medieval trails including the Golden and Castle paths, and a number of former trading, smuggling and border routes. Hikers on the Goldsteig trail have the possibility to explore one national park and five natural parks that offer a variety of unique, pristine landscapes. While Goldsteig’s main trail is a challenge reserved for longdistance walkers, another 750 kilometers of side paths offer smaller stages for day and weekend tours
